Management of Public Space in Retail Industry

16.12.2025

The Scope

For one of our clients in the retail industry we delivered an AI-driven public space management solution based on computer vision and video analytics. The project focused on transforming existing surveillance infrastructure into a real-time analytical system capable of monitoring visitor behavior, movement, and density across high-traffic public environments. ITP, with over 30 years of experience in digital transformation, supports organizations in modernizing their IT systems and processes.

 The Problem

Operators of large public spaces face limited visibility into how people actually use their environments. Key challenges included:

  • Lack of accurate, real-time data on visitor numbers across different zones
  • Inability to detect overcrowding and potentially unsafe situations early
  • No clear understanding of visitor movement routes and dwell time
  • High reliance on manual monitoring, which is resource-intensive and not scalable

Existing systems provided video feeds but did not deliver actionable insights needed for effective safety management and space optimization.

The Solution

ITP implemented an AI-based video analytics system that enhances standard surveillance cameras with intelligent computer vision capabilities.

The solution provides:

  • Real-time people counting across defined areas
  • Detection of crowd density and congestion zones
  • Visualization of visitor movement paths
  • Analysis of time spent near specific zones or points of interest

All capabilities are managed through SPAIS, ITP’s unified platform for computer vision model management, monitoring, and analytics. The platform enables rapid expansion to new scenarios without deploying separate systems.

The Outcome

The implemented solution enabled public space operators to:

  • Improve situational awareness and respond faster to crowding risks
  • Optimize space usage based on real visitor behavior
  • Enhance safety without increasing operational overhead
  • Shift from reactive monitoring to proactive, data-driven management

The system delivers continuous, real-time insights that were not achievable through traditional monitoring approaches.

Key Takeaways

  • Computer vision transforms passive video systems into active management tools
  • Real-time analytics improves both safety and operational efficiency
  • A unified platform approach ensures scalability and faster adoption of new use cases

Data-driven insights enable better decision-making in complex public environments
